 I’m old enough to remember a time when the only way to research products or services was to ask around friends and family to learn about their experiences, talk to the relevant sales representatives and their competing counterparts, and gather all possible information to make a semi-informed decision. Even then, you would be in the hands of the sales representatives, who were the gatekeepers of most of the necessary information to make an informed decision.

Nowadays, the tables have been turned. Our customers, or consumers in general, all have the potential to do the necessary research on their own. Thanks to our internet enabled mobile phones, we can all find any information we need right at our fingertips. When it is finally time to come into contact with the company or the respective sales representative we are well informed and maintain control of the conversation and the sales process.

Most people involved in the marketing of a small business believe they have challenges particular to their situations. In reality, though, they don’t. Our problems as small business marketers stem from the fact that even though we think our customers should care about this or that advantage of our products or services, they just don’t. This is a fact that we have to come to terms with. Unless our products or services are truly unique and can not be found elsewhere, they are not going to care.

On that note, how do we get customers to lend their attention to us, get to know and like us, trust us, our products, or our services?

The solution: give them what they want. Our prospects and customers alike want the information that will make them savvier about your industry, your product, or your service. Either teach them or entertain them. Better yet, do both.

We live in a world where every company is expected to be a media company, and we must live and work at the intersection of business and media to gain a competitive advantage. Long gone are the heydays of conventional tv and radio ads where nobody is really paying attention or even cold calling in which everybody concerned is being interrupted.

Today, there are so many other companies competing for your customer’s attention that most are no longer receptive to traditional advertising. If you want their attention, you have to attract it, and earn their attention, to gain their permission to interact with them.
